About This Role
We're looking for a Senior AI Agent Engineer to join our Developer Experience team and take full ownership of Relay's internal AI agent — a Slack-native system that investigates issues, answers questions, and executes operational work across our decentralized infrastructure stack. This is a builder's role, not a research gig: success is measured by what the agent reliably accomplishes inside real workflows, safely and accurately, not by how clever the prompts look.
What You'll Be Doing
Own the agent's roadmap end-to-end — prioritizing improvements based on impact, frequency, and risk across Relay's cross-chain systems
Convert expert knowledge from engineers and ops teams into agent skills, decision trees, and escalation logic
Build retrieval and knowledge systems that let the agent reason over Relay's structured and unstructured data with full provenance
Integrate the agent securely with internal tools and APIs using MCP and similar protocols
Treat permissions, approvals, and failure recovery as first-class product features, not afterthoughts
Track and report on task success rate, correction frequency, latency, and cost to continuously refine performance
What We're Looking For
5+ years of experience in software engineering, developer tooling, or platform engineering
Hands-on production experience with LLM agents — tool use, retrieval, orchestration, structured outputs
Strong TypeScript or Python skills and experience building robust API integrations
Experience designing evaluation frameworks or tests for nondeterministic, AI-driven systems
Comfort working with secrets, permissions, and auditability in distributed systems
Excellent written communication — you can translate a domain expert's reasoning into a precise technical spec
A product mindset: you know when deterministic code beats an autonomous agent
Bonus Points
Experience with MCP or comparable agent/tool context protocols
Background building Slack apps, support automation, or internal developer platforms
Familiarity with knowledge graphs, entity resolution, taxonomy design, or semantic search
Prior exposure to blockchain, crypto, or DeFi infrastructure and its unique operational demands
