Senior Security Engineer, Digital Asset Custody (Contract-to-Hire)

Location: Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth area or Austin), hybrid, 4 days onsite per week

Engagement: 12-month contract with strong conversion potential

We're hiring on behalf of a leading financial services client that is building out its institutional digital asset platform. They need a senior, hands-on engineer to be the technical authority for how crypto assets are secured, governed, and recovered.

This is an individual contributor role with real influence. You'll make the calls on key protection, custody design, and risk, and work directly with architects, security leaders, and operations teams.

What you'll own

Key management and cryptographic design

• Architect institutional-grade key management using HSMs and multi-party computation (MPC)
• Cover the full key lifecycle: generation, secure storage, rotation, signing, and recovery
• Define the trade-offs and patterns between hot, warm, and cold storage
• Make sure cryptographic designs hold up under regulatory and audit scrutiny
• Work with Cybersecurity and Risk teams to build in zero-trust and defense-in-depth principles

Custody policy and governance

• Lead the design of a policy engine that controls approvals, limits, segregation of duties, and transaction exceptions
• Build policies that are code-driven, deterministic, testable, and fully auditable
• Turn business, legal, and risk requirements into enforceable technical controls

Resilience, recovery, and incident response

• Design recovery strategies for key loss, quorum failure, and blockchain-level events
• Write and maintain incident and recovery runbooks
• Work with Ops, Security, and SRE to test those procedures, not just document them
• Lead post-incident root cause analysis and long-term fixes

Architecture and risk posture

• Keep custody design consistent across wallets, chains, and environments
• Spot operational and architectural risks early and propose mitigations with clear trade-offs
• Make sure the platform scales to new assets, chains, and tokenized products
• Raise the bar on enterprise security and engineering standards

AI-assisted engineering

• Use GenAI and agentic tools to speed up threat modeling, design, documentation, testing, and reviews
• Set the standard for AI-assisted work: fast, but correct
  

What you bring

Must have

• 10+ years in software engineering, specializing in security-critical or cryptographic systems
• Hands-on experience with HSMs, MPC frameworks, and key management platforms
• Working knowledge of smart contract security tooling (e.g., Slither, Mythril, Foundry fuzzing)
• Strong implementation skills in C, C++, Rust, or Go
• Experience working alongside external security auditors and firms
• Track record of designing systems where failure carries serious consequences
• Solid grounding in distributed systems and fault-tolerant architecture
• Proven ability to act as a technical authority without managing people

Strong plus

• Background in crypto custody, digital asset platforms, or blockchain infrastructure
• Ownership of incident response, DR design, or security runbooks
• Skill at explaining risk trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Systems-level thinking across technology, security, policy, and operations
• Comfort challenging assumptions and raising concerns early
• Experience applying AI tools to complex engineering workflows
