Start-up Chief Operating Officer (9 month contract)
About This Role
Applied Blockchain | Applied Edge sits at the cutting edge of distributed systems innovation, advising and building AI solutions for institutions navigating the crypto and digital asset space. This nine-month engagement runs from early September 2026 through mid-May 2027, covering a maternity leave period with deliberate handover windows at both ends. You'll inherit a running operation and have the support needed to lead with confidence from day one.
What You'll Be Doing
Own end-to-end operational execution across a fast-moving blockchain and AI advisory business
Drive cross-functional alignment between engineering, delivery, and client-facing teams working on smart contracts, decentralized infrastructure, and AI-driven solutions
Manage budgets, resourcing, and vendor relationships to keep projects on track
Serve as a key liaison with regulated financial institution clients exploring DeFi, digital assets, and AI integration
Maintain and refine internal processes, ensuring operational continuity throughout the handover period
Report directly to senior leadership on operational health, risks, and opportunities
What We're Looking For
Proven COO or senior operations leadership experience, ideally within a start-up or scale-up environment
Familiarity with blockchain, web3, or fintech sectors—comfort with terms like distributed ledgers, smart contracts, and decentralized systems is a strong plus
Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and step into an existing operational structure quickly
Strong stakeholder management skills, particularly with regulated or institutional clients
Excellent organisational and communication skills to ensure a seamless handover in and out of the role
Comfortable operating in a lean, high-accountability team
Bonus Points
Prior experience advising or operating within regulated financial institutions
Exposure to AI-blockchain convergence projects or digital asset infrastructure
Understanding of crypto compliance and regulatory frameworks in the UK/EU
Network within the web3 or institutional DeFi ecosystem
