About This Role
This is a rare founding-engineer opportunity inside the Office of the CTO, where you'll sit shoulder-to-shoulder with Legal leadership rather than behind a product backlog. You'll be the bridge between Coinbase's distributed ledger business and the attorneys who govern it across 60+ global subsidiaries — translating legal workflows into shippable AI tooling that drives real efficiency across contract review, regulatory filings, and governance operations.
What You'll Be Doing
Embed directly with Legal leadership to identify the highest-leverage automation opportunities across contract review, regulatory drafting, and subsidiary governance
Rapidly prototype using Coinbase's existing AI platform, defaulting to reuse before recommending net-new builds
Own the Legal automation roadmap alongside the VP of Legal and CCO, converting complex workflows — entity management, litigation tracking, compliance reporting, product counsel reviews — into clear engineering requirements
Define build-vs-buy strategy for Legal tooling across internal builds, partner team solutions, and vendor platforms
Design every automated output with traceability, auditability, and human-in-the-loop review as non-negotiable guardrails, protecting privilege and defensibility
Drive org-wide adoption through demos, brown-bags, and continuous feedback loops with Legal stakeholders
What We're Looking For
5+ years shipping production software in ambiguous, stakeholder-heavy environments; greenfield build experience is a strong plus
Hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications — prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, hallucination mitigation, and human-in-the-loop design for high-stakes outputs
Proven ability to embed with non-technical domain experts and rapidly translate complex workflows into technical specs
Familiarity with legal/compliance systems: contract lifecycle management, regulatory filings, entity governance, privilege-sensitive data handling
No legal background required — just curiosity and willingness to learn the domain
Comfort operating independently in a fast-moving, crypto-native environment with constantly shifting priorities
Bonus Points
Understanding of multi-agent orchestration — handoffs, escalation paths, and auditability in agentic systems
Prior experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or embedded technical advisor, ideally within legal-tech, compliance-tech, or RegTech
Exposure to smart contracts, DeFi infrastructure, or other decentralized systems
Track record of responsibly scaling generative AI tools with measurable gains in cost, quality, and workflow efficiency
