About This Role
This Senior Counsel role sits within Kraken's Consumer Legal team, part of a wider Product Legal team of 10 embedded with Kraken's Product, Design, and Engineering teams. The group is made up of product lawyers from a range of tradfi, fintech, and crypto backgrounds who partner directly with product teams to find clear, defensible paths to launch. The role is based in the UK or EU and is fully remote, open to a qualified solicitor in the UK or someone admitted in an EU jurisdiction.
What You'll Be Doing
Partnering directly with Product, Design, and Engineering teams on consumer products spanning crypto trading, earn, payments, on-chain integrations, equities, and tokenised equities
Shaping and shipping novel consumer products and experiences
Advising on regulatory and legal risk with a commercially accountable, pragmatic approach, presenting stakeholders with clear options and recommendations
Distilling complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, actionable guidance for non-lawyers and product stakeholders
Reporting to the Head of Consumer Legal within the Consumer Legal team
What We're Looking For
Qualified lawyer — Solicitor of England & Wales, Irish Solicitor, or equivalent admission in an EU Member State
5+ years' PQE in financial services law, gained at a regulated financial services firm, a crypto services provider, or in private practice, ideally including direct product counselling experience
Preference for experience advising on regulated MiFID investment services and familiarity with relevant crypto-asset regimes, including MiCA, AMLD5, UK financial promotions, and/or e-money regulations
Outstanding analytical, drafting, and organisational skills, with clear, plain-English writing
Ability to translate complex legal and regulatory issues into practical guidance for non-lawyers and product stakeholders
A pragmatic, commercially accountable approach to legal and regulatory risk
Genuine interest in crypto and familiarity with the features of Kraken's apps and products as well as those of its competitors
Bonus Points
Expertise in the MiCA framework as it applies to CASPs, including brokerage, custody, and the operation of trading platforms
Expertise in the UK crypto-asset financial promotions regime and proposals for the incoming authorisation regime for crypto asset service providers
Expertise in MiFID frameworks applicable to investment services, including derivatives, equities, funds, and emerging tokenised financial instruments
Familiarity with using AI tools such as Enterprise GPTs to improve efficiency in legal service delivery, including building custom GPTs that let stakeholders self-serve on commoditised legal and regulatory queries
