"What You'll Be Doing"
About This Role
As the Staff Analytics Engineer on this team, you'll set the technical direction for Coinbase's financial data layer, working directly alongside Accounting, Controllership and FP&A. This role requires understanding not just how data moves, but how the books are closed, audited and controlled.
What You'll Be Doing
Partner with Accounting and FP&A to support month-end and quarter-end close, building the datasets, reconciliations and reporting needed to close the books accurately and on time.
Make financial data and pipelines audit-ready, including SOX-compliant controls, lineage, change management and evidence for internal and external auditors.
Design and own the architecture of curated, well-documented source-of-truth financial datasets in Snowflake/Databricks that are correct, consistent and tie out to the general ledger.
Build and own scalable batch (and, where needed, near-real-time) pipelines orchestrated with Airflow/dbt, including dependency management, backfills and runbooks.
Define reusable data quality and reconciliation frameworks—tests, monitoring, alerting, SLAs—and align with Accounting on what "done" means for financial correctness.
Drive data contracts with upstream engineering teams, mentor Analytics Engineers, and build abstractions such as Python packages, UDFs and LLM-assisted tools to make finance data users more efficient.
What We're Looking For
Accounting exposure, either formal (an accounting/finance degree, relevant coursework, or CPA/CMA) or hands-on experience working with Accounting/FP&A teams on tasks like month-end close, reconciliations or financial reporting.
Expert-level SQL (window functions, complex aggregations, optimization) and strong Python skills (OOP, reusable frameworks); production ETL or SQL experience is required.
Deep data modeling experience, including designing modular, reusable source-of-truth models (star/snowflake schemas, SCDs) used across multiple teams.
A track record of building and owning production ETL/ELT pipelines with dbt, Airflow or similar tools, including testing, monitoring and SLAs.
Experience with a modern data warehouse or lakehouse platform (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or comparable); Snowflake specifically is not required, but equivalent warehouse experience is.
Staff-level scope of experience: leading multi-quarter, cross-team technical initiatives, setting architecture and direction, and mentoring engineers.
