Director, Digital Assets (Technical)
About This Role
This is a rare chance to join a pioneering Digital Assets Team at the intersection of traditional asset management and web3 innovation. Starting with the Baillie Gifford Enhanced Yield Fund (BAGEY), you'll help define how a major investment firm brings its capabilities onto the blockchain, with the ambition to expand tokenised offerings as the decentralized finance landscape matures. You'll have genuine influence over strategy, architecture, and execution in a space that's still being written.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead the technical strategy for tokenised fund structures and blockchain-based investment products
Evaluate and select distributed ledger platforms, custody solutions, and smart contract frameworks suited to institutional-grade DeFi applications
Partner with investment, legal, and operations teams to translate traditional fund mechanics into onchain equivalents
Oversee technical due diligence on crypto infrastructure providers, auditors, and blockchain protocols
Drive the build-out of secure, scalable systems supporting digital asset issuance, settlement, and reporting
Represent Baillie Gifford in industry forums shaping institutional adoption of tokenisation and web3 finance
What We're Looking For
Deep technical understanding of blockchain architecture, smart contracts, and digital asset custody models
Proven experience delivering crypto, DeFi, or tokenisation projects within a regulated or institutional environment
Strong grasp of distributed systems design and the tradeoffs between public and permissioned ledgers
Ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, including investment professionals and senior leadership
Track record of leading cross-functional teams through ambiguous, fast-evolving technical landscapes
Commercial awareness of how blockchain innovation intersects with asset management and fund structuring
Bonus Points
Hands-on experience with smart contract development or auditing (Solidity, Rust, or similar)
Familiarity with tokenised fund structures, stablecoins, or onchain yield products
Prior exposure to institutional crypto custody, prime brokerage, or digital asset trading infrastructure
Engagement with regulatory frameworks governing digital assets across UK/EU jurisdictions
