Staff Software Engineer
About This Role
This is a rare opportunity to shape mission-critical systems powering Circle Payments Network and Arc, our enterprise-grade blockchain designed to serve as the Economic OS for the internet. You'll operate at the intersection of distributed systems engineering, smart contracts, and large-scale financial infrastructure—working alongside world-class engineers solving problems that don't yet have textbook answers.
What You'll Be Doing
Design and build highly available, fault-tolerant distributed systems that underpin global stablecoin and payment infrastructure
Architect scalable backend services and APIs that interface with blockchain networks and smart contract layers
Drive technical strategy across teams, mentoring engineers and setting standards for code quality and system design
Collaborate cross-functionally with product, security, and compliance teams to ship resilient DeFi and payments infrastructure
Evaluate and integrate emerging blockchain protocols to extend Circle's programmable money ecosystem
Lead incident response and system reliability initiatives for mission-critical crypto infrastructure
What We're Looking For
8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including distributed systems at scale
Deep expertise in backend architecture, API design, and cloud-native infrastructure
Proven track record leading complex technical initiatives from design through production
Strong communication skills and ability to influence technical direction across teams
Experience building systems requiring high security, auditability, and regulatory awareness
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
Bonus Points
Hands-on experience with blockchain protocols, smart contracts, or decentralized ledger technology
Familiarity with stablecoins, DeFi primitives, or digital asset custody systems
Contributions to open-source crypto or web3 projects
Experience in regulated fintech or payments environments
