About This Role
As Engineering Lead for our Core Banking Platform team, you'll own the technical direction of a distributed, multi-currency wallet infrastructure that underpins global transfers, card issuing, lending, and payment acquiring for over 676,000 businesses. This isn't just backend engineering—it's building the equivalent of a trusted settlement layer, where financial accuracy, scalability, and system integrity matter as much as they do in any smart contract or DeFi protocol. You'll shape how a crypto-adjacent, high-throughput financial operating system scales across continents.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead and mentor a team of high-caliber engineers, cultivating a culture of ownership, technical rigor, and innovation
Drive hands-on architecture decisions for a transaction engine built for scalability, consistency, and airtight financial accuracy
Build and maintain a distributed, multi-currency wallet platform that functions as the financial ledger backbone of Airwallex
Partner cross-functionally with product and engineering teams to align distributed systems design with business outcomes
Champion AI-driven tooling and observability improvements to elevate engineering velocity and system reliability
Tackle complex availability and consistency challenges across mission-critical, high-volume financial infrastructure
What We're Looking For
8+ years of software engineering experience, with deep expertise in distributed systems architecture and backend development
Proven track record solving consistency and availability trade-offs in large-scale, mission-critical environments
Strong database and data modeling fundamentals, ideally within high-throughput transactional systems
Exceptional communication skills—able to translate complex technical trade-offs for both engineers and business stakeholders
Demonstrated people leadership experience, mentoring engineers and scaling high-performing teams
First-principles thinker who moves fast, takes ownership, and makes sound calls under ambiguity
Bonus Points
Experience with blockchain, smart contracts, or decentralized ledger technologies
Background in fintech, crypto infrastructure, or DeFi platforms
Familiarity with building systems that require cryptographic-level accuracy and auditability
Exposure to multi-currency, cross-border payment rails or digital asset settlement systems
